Badgification has become a big buzzword in the corporate eLearning space – and for good reason. Employers are utilizing digital badges as well as certifications within their learning platforms to acknowledge and reward employee training achievements and milestones.
At a basic level, badgification allows employees to receive badges in recognition of skills and achievements they’ve earned. At a deeper level, badges are proving to be extrinsic rewards that enhance learning, encourage participation, and apply user-friendly game-design thinking to online learning.
Badges in Moodle
Moodle provides the ability for organizations to issue these badges directly within their learning platforms, allowing learners to collect a badge for each course completed where a new skill was acquired and showcase them wherever they like, including on social networking sites like LinkedIn, job sites, or personal websites. Thus, badges make the learning experience more personal and ensure that skills are easily transferable.
In addition to creating a more personal learning experience, badges are one way to provide instant feedback for the learner. When using badges, mastery of content is tied directly to learner achievement and ownership which encourages a learner’s performance and engagement.
Badges are also fully compatible with Mozilla Open Badges. Those created in Moodle may be displayed on a user’s profile or pushed to their Open Badges backpack and public badge collections in a user’s backpack will display in their Moodle profile.
Future employers, organizations, or schools can explore the data behind each badge issued to verify skills, achievements, and interests. Because badges are portable, employees readily engage with a company’s training and development programs to hone their skills for future endeavors and collect badges to showcase these skills.
Tips for Using Badges:
- Remember that one of the benefits of incorporating badges into your courses is that learners can use them to verify and promote their skills. Try to align your badges to key concepts and abilities like proficiencies, employee-earned certifications, human resources training topics, or other achievements that communicate aptitudes across many contexts.
- Employ badges for unique accomplishments or performance specific to your course content. Perhaps you’ll award a badge for exceptional participation within forums, high scores on a difficult exam, or timeliness in course completion. Uses for badges are virtually endless and cross many disciplines so the sky is the limit!
- Consider opportunities to link badges closely to completion or achievement so as to align the reward with the effort. This will make the most sense at the course level when tying a badge to activity completion or a specific accomplishment rather than a site badge that may be awarded for course completion.
Badges are enabled at the site level by default. A teacher can add and manage badges in their course by accessing the “Manage Badges” option under Site Administration > Badges. Not only can a teacher manage and edit badges, but specific criteria can be set for each badge. Keep in mind that for badges to be awarded for course or activity completion, completion tracking must be enabled in the site and the course.
All in all, using badgification in your professional education is a win-win. Badgification gives employees incentive to continue developing their skills, which benefits the entire organization.
