In past years, October has been a very busy month for eThink with important EdTech conferences taking place at many different locations. October 2019 was certainly not any different. This year, after the MoodleMoot US 2019, eThink also attended the Online Learning Summit / I4PL Conference, EDUCAUSE and DevLearn 2019. These conferences provide excellent opportunities to interact with large audiences and complete many engaging conversations in a short timeframe.
Attending these eLearning conferences each year provides key benefits and opportunities for eThink, including:
- First, many of our eThink clients attend these conferences, providing the opportunity to meet their eThink support team members in person at these events. So many clients approach our booth with the sole purpose of saying thank you for your hard work and attaching some names to faces to the LMS team that answers their support tickets, which always makes our day!
- Secondly, these conferences allow attendees who believe that their current LMS does not adequately address their unique needs to evaluate solutions that might be a better fit for them. During these conversations and on-site demonstrations at the eThink booth, we find that many attendees are impressed with the flexibility of open-source LMS tools.
- Finally, there are opportunities to have conversations and establish relationships with potential partners. Partnerships with like-minded companies in the space allows our team here at eThink to provide an even stronger solution to our clients as we help them address additional components of their learning ecosystem surrounding the LMS.
Online Learning Summit / I4PL 2019
The Online Learning Summit & I4PL 2019 Conferences were held jointly in Toronto, Ontario and is a unique conference experience that brings together attendees from both higher education institutions and organizations focused on providing corporate professional learning solutions. Attendees greatly benefit from connecting with organizations and solutions from both sectors and all industries. According to their own statement, the Online Learning Summit and I4PL conference allows delegates “the opportunity to discover new modes of teaching, learning, course delivery, and assessment in higher education and corporate learning and development.”
The eThink team spoke with many attendees from organizations across North America and beyond. At this conference, eThink also presented at the breakout sessions. Our first session was titled, “Hacking the LMS Evaluation Process: Considerations for a Smooth Selection.” During this session, eThink’s VP of Business Strategy & Development, Randy Jones, explored strategies and considerations for a successful LMS evaluation process, including industry research that helps with executive buy-in; how to determine what is truly important to your organization’s L&D ecosystem such as integration capabilities, service level, and type of technology your LMS is built on; and how to create an LMS RFP to ensure selection of the best possible vendor/platform.
Jones also joined eThink’s Director of Customer Solutions, Jeremy Schweitzer, for “Reaching eLearning Goals with Moodle: Case Studies in Higher Education” where they discussed some of the innovative ways colleges and institutions are using the Moodle LMS to provide engaging online learning, such as incorporating gamified content, simulations, competency-based education, interactive activities like forums and multimedia submissions, and a blended learning approach. They were both well attended and led to some beneficial conversations to help organizations understand their open source LMS options.

The EDUCAUSE Annual Conference was held this year at McCormick Place in Chicago. It is best described as “the premier higher ed IT event bringing together professionals and technology providers from around the world to share ideas, grow professionally, and discover solutions to today’s challenges.” At this conference in particular, a constant stream of current eThink clients took time to search out our booth and simply stop by to say, “Hello,” and “Thank you!” Four members of the eThink support team attended and were able to visit with many clients with whom they had spoken to frequently but had never met face-to-face. Some clients even shared their positive stories with potential clients who were visiting the eThink booth at the same time. These positive experiences were certainly the results of each and every member of the eThink services team, dedicated to providing the highest level of LMS support.
Also in attendance at EDUCAUSE was the Moodle HQ team. Together, Moodle HQ and eThink Education were able to discuss the learning possibilities available using Moodle. Additionally, both teams had the opportunity to discuss the Moodle Educator Certification program developed by Moodle HQ’s Education Team and hosted by Certified Moodle Partners. Going beyond your average “how to” training on Moodle functionality, the MEC’s focus is on teaching and learning with consideration for how certain tools can be leveraged to meet a variety of instructional goals. eThink’s training experts are running the MEC and support attendees through this comprehensive, competency-based curriculum.

The DevLearn 2019 Conference was held in Las Vegas and was one of the largest conferences we attended this year. Thousands of organizations and solutions and services providers within the industry gathered to “look at what’s now, what’s new, and what’s next in learning and development.” eThink joined Totara HQ in a booth, which included two large spaces to conduct on-site demos for attendees and interact with hundreds of passersby including both prospects and existing clients.
Joining efforts with theTotara team allowed us to turn to them if an attendee had specific questions about the product roadmap or wanted to meet the R&D team behind the products we deploy for our clients every day. This experience proved incredibly valuable with a record-breaking number of conversations held and great interest generated around eThink’s fully-managed LMS solutions.
Many of the eThink team travelled to and from these premier events to strike up brand new conversations, continue conversations with existing clients and meet representatives from potential partners. With every conversation held, it remains eThink’s goal to help clients deliver timely learning that meets the objectives of their organization and improves the learning of those who desire to improve. And as new trends, tools, and strategies are constantly emerging in the EdTech and eLearning spaces, these events provide our team with valuable insight and the opportunity to explore how to further provide scalable and sustainable learning programs.
