What does a one-hour introductory webinar, an 8-hour sales training, and a week-long intensive training on cognitive interviewing have in common? They are all examples of the types of training that can be managed and tracked within the LMS with the Facetoface plugin in Moodle.
Manage In-Person & Online Events
Whether a training session is in person or online, anytime you have synchronous sessions that you need to manage the Facetoface (f2f) plugin merits consideration. It allows you to create a list of available sessions at different times and/or locations within a single course.
Learners can view the available options and sign up for the session that works best for their schedule. The learner will receive a confirmation message and can also be sent reminder messages and calendar events. Mentors or supervisors can be notified of each sign up or, if needed, approve sessions before a learner receives a confirmation.
The version of the plugin for Moodle 3.2 and beyond gives the instructor the ability to let learners cancel their own sessions or disable that option and require them to contact the instructor or training manager to cancel registrations. Either way, if a learner cancels a registration the learner (and supervisor if applicable) will receive a copy of the cancellation message, keeping everyone on the same page.
The f2f plugin can also streamline session management for instructors by regulating the maximum session size and tracking the waitlist. As seats become available from cancellations (or increases to the session capacity) learners will automatically be moved from the waitlist to the confirmed list on a first come-first served basis.
This is also handy for tracking interest in proposed sessions or tentative locations. Simply create a session without a defined date and every user will be put on a waitlist. LMS administrators and/or instructors can then see if there is enough interest to commit the resources to holding the event. From there, simply adding a date will move users to the confirmed list and send them notification of the change and session details.

Track & Report
Although eLearning may make up the bulk of training programs, many organizations utilize a blended learning experience and offer in-person workshops and trainings for their learners. The Facetoface plugin allows organizations to track traditional classroom-style learning within the LMS to provide a comprehensive overview of the learning experience and unified reporting options.
Once a session is over, be it a traditional or online event, instructors can take attendance so that f2f can be used to trigger course completion, issue badges, or generate certificates. This way, learners’ educational efforts are acknowledged and tracked in one centralized location – the LMS – to illustrate all forms of training that contributed to improving competencies.
Furthermore, LMS administrators can define custom session fields that they can add to all events sitewide. The fields can be visible to the learner, such as location fields or recommended audience, or hidden for things such as internal costs or other fields necessary for internal reporting needs.
