Personalized Learning Paths in Moodle Workplace

In order for organizations to provide tangible value within their Learning & Development (L&D) programs, it’s important to provide employees with learning experiences that are tailored and unique to their roles, skillset needs, or professional interests. Personalized learning paths can be created within your Moodle Workplace Learning Management System (LMS)  to help lead learners along in their professional development not just during initial onboarding, but throughout the entirety of the employee lifecycle.

What are Personalized Learning Paths?

Personalized learning paths (PLP) are unique road maps created for each employee or learner that guide them along their educational and professional journey with relevant courses and training content.

Personalized learning is a philosophy that can be applied to any learning environment, whether online or in person. Instead of generic, time-consuming courses that learners are unlikely to engage in, a personalized learning path adds substantial value to the learning experience. This method puts the learner in the driver’s seat of their educational development, leading the charge on the topics or skillsets most important to them.

PLP’s are especially valuable in professional environments, such as corporate training. As essential as L&D is to employee development, it inevitably takes time away from their regular work and productivity. However, personalized learning paths can revolutionize your L&D process, minimizing interaction with trainings that might not have much relevancy to a specific employee’s job role and encouraging learners to enroll in courses and access resources that can have an immediate impact on performance and are a useful addition to their skillset.

Creating Personalized Learning Paths Online

Personalized learning paths can be more efficiently tracked, managed, and optimized through an eLearning environment. In particular, open-source solutions, such as the Moodle Workplace LMS, allow you to incorporate more customization in order to increase the value learners get out of the experience by delivering the right courses and content to learners at the right time.

Personalized Learning Paths in Moodle Workplace

Creating personalized learning paths for your employees in Moodle Workplace is simple. Once you have designed your course, it is likely that you will want to set completion conditions that automatically report when a learner completes a course.  Overall course completion conditions can then be set based on several options, including the completion of one or more activities within the course.  

Completion conditions can be set on one or more of the activities and/or resources in your course, which can be used to trigger your overall course completion conditions. If enabled, activity completion can be marked manually or automatically, based on certain conditions and the activity will only be considered complete when all conditions are met. 

You can also combine Restrict access with Activity completion to guide your learners through the course in a more controlled manner.  For example, you can set conditions that require that a user must complete activity A prior to accessing activity B. This ensures learners complete training in the proper order and are unable to skip ahead until they have mastered the prior training. 

It is also likely that your learners may need to take more than one course.  Moodle Workplace Programs and Certifications allow for the creation of adaptive learning paths that can include multiple courses and can incorporate requirements that define the start and end dates as well as the order of those courses within a program or certification.  Learning paths can also include settings that determine if a course is required or optional.

Learners can be allocated or enrolled into courses, programs or certifications individually or automatically based on dynamic rules that leverage the learner’s job assignments within their organization, custom profile fields, or completion of other courses, programs or certifications. During allocation, notifications can be configured to send personalized messages, and completion can be awarded automatically with notifications, certificates, and badges.

The dynamic rules can also promote a learner into the next program based on their completion.

Completion status and other reporting rounds out the process to help track the user’s journey on their learning path. The report builder tool allows you to create the views you and others need to help guide your learners toward their learning goals.
