Using the Import Process in Moodle™

Pour a cup of coffee, put your feet up, close your eyes and picture this. It’s the day before school break and you’re ready to close your laptop and head out for some R&R when your office phone rings… It’s a professor who says, “I just deleted all of the content in my EDU 702 course!” Oh no, they used the Restore process in Moodle™ and it has backfired!

The Moodle™ Restore process can present challenges for some users who aren’t aware of its implications, which is why eThink recommends you use the Import process instead.

Read on to learn how simple it is to use the Import process, and how you can advise your staff to use it as an alternative to the Restore process.

Import vs. Restore & Backup

The Course Import feature allows users the ability to directly pull content from any other active course on your site, saving instructors the time required to recreate this content from scratch.

Although saved time is a lifesaver for many, you want to be sure to do things right the first time around. That is why the Import process is a wise alternative for many of our clients, who have been bitten by the Restore bug.

Restoring course content is another way to avoid recreating content from scratch, but it can result in restoring content into the wrong place thus deleting content that was truly needed.  For this reason, importing is a much safer

Import: Step by Step

To import content, please follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to the course in which you are wishing to insert content.
  • Click into your editing gear icon located top right and select “Import.”
    • Here you will see a list of courses that you can bring the existing content over from.
    • Please do note that this list only shows about 10 courses by default, but you can use the search function beneath the list to help find the needed course.

  • You then will be walked through an Import ‘wizard’ that will guide you along the Import process.
  • Please choose whether or not to include Activities, Blocks, Filters, and Question Banks.
    • Note: You cannot import Quiz activities if you do not select the Question Bank at this step in the process.
  • Select the specific activities/resources you wish to import over.
    • Some things to note:
      • Turnitin V1 and V2 Assignments can be imported but Turnitin V1 assignments must be reset before being used. We recommend instructors recreate V1 assignments as V2.
      • If you want the gradebook configuration to carry over (categories and applied weights), select all activities during import and then delete the ones you don’t need after.
  • Confirm the content you are bringing over looks correct in the Review step.
  • Begin the Import process with the ‘Perform Import’ button.

At this point, the Import process is complete and you should be able to see all the content you selected has been moved over from your prior course! Pretty easy, huh?
