What is 508 Compliance?
Shorthand for compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The original law was passed in 1973, but Section 508 was added in 1998, expanding on the original Act's language to explicitly include accessibility for those with disabilities in electronic and information technology. This requirement is imposed on all federal agencies in their materials and resources, as well as any contractor who works with a federal agency.
While other organizations and companies are not legally compelled to comply, 508 compliance is often viewed as an accessibility standard for design best practices in many technology fields, including web design.
