What is Learning Experience Design?
Also known as LX design, this field concerns itself with designing the individual experiences learners encounter as instructional moments within a learning management system. This makes it distinct from instructional design, which is concerned chiefly with the method of delivering training or instruction. Instead, LX design focuses on the learner's experience as they move through that material. It goes hand in hand with instructional design in a lot of ways, but the learner-first orientation is the big difference.
When you put the learning experience first, you have to think more about how each individual accessing the LMS encounters the information and integrates it into their knowledge base. That means figuring out how to reinforce instruction, how to provide opportunities for synthesis and analysis that lead to greater internalization, and ways to evaluate how learners are using that lesson as part of a holistic educational process.Learning experience design specialists have to focus on how the space will interact with the learning process, not just how easy to navigate or intuitive it is. That means a lot of research, experimentation, and evaluation before anything can be implemented. The move toward learner-centered design is part of a larger movement within technological professions known as human-oriented design, and it is pretty much what it sounds like: a design process that emphasizes the way people actually use technology in order to build systems that are more accessible and useful to everyone.
