What is A Learning Experience Platform?

Learning experience platforms are online spaces that allow learners to access the social and instructional resources they need in an individualized way. Most LXPs are designed to work within the L&D departments of companies, not necessarily as classroom resources. This makes them different from traditional learning management systems in their focus, but in their function they look a lot alike. The biggest difference that most casual users will see at a glance is the way LXPs bring together a wide range of modules and resources to provide for the long-term learning needs of their users.

They also tend to focus more on the social and integrative aspects of learning, providing users with a way to interact with other learners and build knowledge together. The other differences are more visible in the design and back end administration, with the most notable innovation there being the way LXPs incorporate machine learning and artificial intelligence to help identify and reinforce positive behavior patterns like daily check-ins and course participation.

Machine learning and AI also help LXPs understand what courses might be relevant to long-term learners and to suggest them, along with appropriate supplemental modules and other resources that suit the learner’s role and behavior within the system. By these criteria, many next-generation LMS platforms are in fact LXPs in their approach, since they tend to incorporate both human-centered design and machine learning in their makeups.
