What Is Machine Learning?

This describes an ability for a system to gather and use information without explicit programming telling it to do so. It's an important component in artificial intelligence systems, but on its own it doesn't constitute full AI. Machine learning is the way that AI systems adapt and change based on responses from earlier stimuli, but it also has applications on its own.

Search algorithms that rank pages more highly based on the number of previous searches that chose them first are a great, easy to understand example of machine learning.
