What is Professional Development?

Broadly speaking, this term refers to any continuing training, education, or mentorship designed to deepen an individual's skills within a field and improve their command of relevant knowledge. It can refer to continuing education programs that lead to credentialing necessary to advance, certification in specific skill sets like process management, or more general training and enrichment designed to help keep skills polished while introducing changes to institutional best practices.

In most cases, the difference between mere training and professional development is that PD emphasizes the long-term professional growth of the learner, whereas general training is designed to communicate practical skills needed for a task at hand immediately.
