What is Self-Paced Learning?
This term describes an instructional style as much as it does a learning style, because self-paced learning environments have to be set up by their facilitators to work for the learners who benefit from them. They allow the learner to control how much material they work through in each session, how long they need to master the material, and sometimes even the order of the learning goals for the particular unit. It is similar to self-directed learning.
This can include allowing learners to do assignments in any order or to repeat lessons even if the assessment in the system is satisfactory, but those are not essential features of this environment, just examples of what can be done to support self-paced learning. The approaches to building these environments are very diverse, with many common techniques and few universal ones other than the defining feature that the learner controls the pace and time needed for mastery.
