A common question we receive when we speak with prospective clients pertains to Moodle or Totara’s capabilities when it comes to supporting specific types of content. Organizations want to ensure that they will be able to incorporate the content they have developed and/or purchased into their site in order to provide engaging and dynamic training and educational programs. The answer to this line of questioning is not only yes, but Moodle and Totara’s standards, compliance, and abilities to support a best-of-breed content strategy represent a key strength of open-source technology.
Why Open Source?
Open-source Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Moodle and Totara, denote freely available code and software that encourage a best-of-breed content model and learning ecosystem. Open-source LMS solutions are designed to integrate well with third-party solutions, allowing your eLearning model to be expanded exponentially with solutions that meet your organization’s specific needs and budget, even as new ones emerge. By using this “plug-and-play” model, L&D professionals can select the right tools for their unique learning and development needs and “plug” them into the LMS hub for a dynamic, streamlined, and highly impactful experience for the learners within your organization.
Creating Best-of-Breed Content with Moodle
Moodle, by design, is inherently flexible in the way that users can set up courses and distribute content to learners. Moodle has a robust set of authoring tools to facilitate content creation directly within the platform, and has also stayed current with trends and new technologies for incorporating externally created content. For example, Moodle supports the LTI standard and is compliant with SCORM 1.2 and AICC. Specifically:
- Moodle is compliant with the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard, which allows for integration of content from external websites. Our clients use LTI to incorporate content from LinkedIn‘s Lynda.com, TedEd, Hoonuit (formerly Atomic Learning), and more.
- Moodle supports the latest SCORM 1.2 specification. SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a standard for packaging e-learning content, which can be created using a variety of tools, such as Storyline and Adobe Captivate. Many eThink clients use these tools to create their own SCORM packages, while others use third party developers such as our partners CourseArc, OpenSketch, OpenSesame, and eLearning Innovation.
- Similar to SCORM, AICC (short for the Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) is an industry-standard for packaging content. Moodle allows AICC packages to be incorporated in the same way that it handles SCORM.
In short, whether you are looking to develop your own training material for sexual harassment training or OSHA compliance, or intending to purchase the best content for your internet security or CPR certification needs, Moodle allows you to bring everything together in a single platform. Regardless of the content provider or format, Moodle allows you to incorporate your best-of-breed content while also taking advantage of Moodle’s robust tools for course delivery, assessment, reporting, and more.
